Mama Pendo refused to enter the station station after sunset.
They sat beneath the ancient tree instead.
his sister placed the cassette, cable, and photographs before her.
“What did Bibi know?”
“She knew a transmission does not die because the body has gone.”
“That is memory. Not an answer.”
“People from the city sometimes use many words so they do not have to hear one answer.”
Leila opened her notebook.
“Tell us the rule Bibi taught the young man.”
Mama Pendo said, “At 3:17, if a dead person calls you, do not say yes.
Do not say I am here. Do not say your full name.”
“Why?”
“Because the thing below does not know whether a transmission belongs to a person until the person identifies themselves.”
“What thing?” his sister asked.
“The Collector of Names.”
his sister exhaled sharply. “A story to frighten children?”
“A name we gave to something that had none.”
Mama Pendo listed five other people who vanished near high-tide nights. Two returned alive but could not speak their own names for months.
“And my mother?” his sister asked.
“Salma heard the voices of her children.”
“She abandoned us?”
“She went to find you.”
“We were home.”
“Not all night.”
his sister stood.
“Bibi said I had a fever and slept.”
“Bibi told children what they could carry.”
That night, his sister and Leila sealed the station station. They removed the main fuse, all batteries, and the generator connection. his sister placed two cameras inside, locked the door, and sealed it with evidence tape.
Before the second night watch, Mama Pendo gave them more rules.
“The calling does not always begin with someone you love,” she said. “Sometimes it begins with your own transmission. It waits to learn which name will make you turn.”
Leila asked whether Mama Pendo had ever seen someone vanish after answering.
“In 2004, two people followed the calls.
Salma was one of them.”
his sister stood. “You said she answered?”
“I said she went into the mangroves after the voices began.”
“And Bibi told you to hide that until now?”
“She believed half the truth would make you follow your mother. So she gave you none.
She may have been wrong.”
his sister felt eighteen years of anger arrive at once.
Protection and imprisonment could use the same locked door.
Leila brought them back to the immediate rules. Do not answer yes. Do not say *I am here*. Do not speak your full name. Do not follow a transmission alone.
If a dead person calls someone living, a third person should say the dead person's name and, *We remember you.*
“Why is that safe?” his sister asked.
“Because it is hungry for people who were never acknowledged.
You recognise the dead without offering the living.”
his sister wrote the instructions down. Even if the explanation was spiritual, the behaviour was sensible crisis procedure.
They sealed the station and positioned three cameras. his sister synchronised clocks and placed recorders inside and outside so she could compare space and delay.
Ten minutes before 3:17, Mama Pendo began reading names under her breath. Each name produced a small mark on the recorder inside the empty building.
Then his sister received a photograph from the young man's number.
It showed a limestone ceiling, rising water, and a handprint on the wall.
Beneath it:
**DO NOT SAY THE WHOLE NAME.**
The phone company traced the last signal to the resort, then several metres out at sea—as if the device had moved without travelling.
At 3:16:50, the air beneath the ancient tree turned cold. There was no wind, yet its leaves rubbed together like people whispering.
At 3:17, the red lamp above the roof came on.
The seal did not move.
From inside the locked station, his sister's own breathing began to play.
One breath.
Two.
Three.
Then her transmission said, “My name is his sister Mbarak.”
The real his sister stood outside with her mouth closed.
Mama Pendo gripped her hand.
“Do not answer, even when it is you.”
Inside the station, the false his sister laughed with Salma's transmission.
On the camera feed, wet footprints appeared one by one across the floor.
They stopped at the locked door.
The handle began to turn from inside.
