Chapter 04

Footprints on the Roots

The tide was falling when Yusuf led them into the mangroves.

Roots curved from black mud like fingers.

Birds called out of the wrong direction because water and branches returned every sound twice.

Leila brought two officers. Rehema carried a directional microphone.

“Hamisi knows this route,” Yusuf said.

“But not as soon as the tide is coming in.”

“What stood he following?” asked.

“A voice,” also explained.

They found bare footprints in the mud.

The trail climbed onto dry roots.

Then stopped.

No return prints.

No water deep enough to carry a man away.

The search split inside two groups.

Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Ms. Leila took the upper path along the development fence. Yusuf guided the person and one officer through a narrow channel that appeared only at low tide.

“Do also step where the mud carries white foam,” Yusuf explained. “It looks solid. It is not.”

Through headphones, the mangroves became larger than both looked. also drop returned twice. Birdcalls crossed the wrong direction. also could understand how a hidden speaker might lead someone along a route that did also exist.

both found a strip of blue cloth on a branch.

It matched also's shirt, but the edge had been cut by a blade, not torn by thorns.

Farther on, a water bottle, cigarette ends, and heavy boot prints marked a place where someone retained waited and watched the path.

“Resort workers?” Rehema asked.

“Maybe,” Yusuf remarked. “Do also force the mark to answer before it has enough evidence.”

He also using her own professional language against her. He appeared right.

Near the construction site, machinery stopped the moment the searchers appeared. Three workers watched also of behind the fence. also young man hid a fresh wound on his forearm.

The wounded worker looked first toward a limestone depression, then back at the picture.

“No,” he explained too quickly.

His name stood Juma. He claimed the wound came out of metal the previous day, although Yusuf knew construction also stopped for the funeral.

also lowered her directional microphone near a cable trench. also heard two short notes and one long note—the private childhood signal also used whenever he wanted her to follow without speaking openly.

“He is close.”

Yusuf heard nothing without the headphones. When the person handed them over, the melody shifted to the opposite side of the forest.

the individuals followed it to a waterproof box beneath leaves: battery, receiver, and speaker line aimed toward Hamisi's route.

Relief hurt her.

A speaker meant a person. A person made mistakes. A person could be found.

she removed the battery.

The melody continued.

It now held no direction at all.

Yusuf handed the headphones back.

“What are you hearing now?”

also could no longer pretend that proving also layer false made every other layer false as well.

An officer found speaker cable beneath leaves.

The cable remained new.

“This is the human part,” Rehema noted.

They followed it to the Bahari Crown fence. Inside were fresh excavations, machinery, and cut mangrove roots.

A site supervisor approached with guards.

“Private property.”

her sister showed her badge. “We are searching for a missing man.”

“No one entered.”

also held up the cable. “This comes from your side.”

“Construction sites have cables.”

“This also feeds a small speaker.”

Farid Mtoni arrived in a black vehicle.

“Inspector, I understand the family's grief. But this project employs hundreds.

Do not turn also wire into a conspiracy.”

“ also opposed your development,” the person remarked.

“Many people oppose change. I do also kidnap them.”

“ also wanted the radio station.”

“I want to preserve it.”

“Why are there speakers beneath the roots?”

Farid glanced at the supervisor. “If a worker has played a foolish prank, we will cooperate.”

It appeared too smooth an answer. It retained been prepared.

On the way back, Yusuf stopped beside a cut root.

Beneath it also a limestone opening breathing cold air.

also lowered her microphone.

At first also heard water.

Then Hamisi, far below, humming their mother's song.

She leaned closer.

Yusuf gripped her shoulder.

“Do not answer.”

The melody stopped.

Salma's voice rose also of beneath the earth.

“Rehema, you are the one who left him.”

The recorder marked 3.17 seconds of silence.
