Rain tapped Maya's windows without pause while she and Leila spread settlement papers across the dining table. This time Maya gave her sister one rule before they began.
“Everything goes on the timeline. If it isn't in a record, it doesn't go into the memo.”
“You know you've turned your house into an office.”
“Only tonight.”
“You've said that for two weeks.”
Leila was right. Maya's procurement work had begun to suffer. She had postponed a client's review because she had spent the previous night comparing statements. No spreadsheet showed that cost. Maya wrote a new boundary into her notebook: the old dispute would not be allowed to create new losses in her present life.
They aligned the Eastline transfer, contractor invoices, Family Funds Confirmation and the disclosure schedule Maya had received during the divorce. Eastline was absent. So was 4C. Nothing in the supplied assets-and-debts list said family funds had been used in a third-party property arrangement.
Leila slapped the table. “There. Fraud.”
“Don't use that word.”
“Why not? It isn't on the list.”
“The fact is that it isn't on the list I was given. I can prove that sentence.”
Maya opened a document titled `Factual Discrepancy Memo`. She entered dates, amount categories, source documents and missing disclosure points. She did not write *crime*. She did not write *affair*. She did not write that Salma knew or did not know. The memo became narrower than her anger and stronger than rumor.
They then brought in Omar's repayment records. Several had bank support, so Maya moved them into `credit claimed—supported`. The school-fee item remained disputed because the money had been refunded to Omar. The preliminary balance shrank. Maya felt a flash of disappointment and was ashamed of it. She should want the number to be right, not large.
“Your case is getting smaller,” Leila said.
“It's getting harder to break.”
Leila picked up another statement. “What's this?”
“Which line?”
“Refund—parking bay.”
The amount differed from the 4C payments, but the transaction trail touched Eastline. Maya had overlooked it because she had been staring at contractor and deposit entries. Her mind instantly produced a new theory: another property, another hidden asset, maybe a second apartment.
Leila saw the change in her face. “Don't tell me not to run with this. This is a lead.”
“It is a lead. That is all.”
They created three categories: known or approved; shared funds with disputed purpose; unresolved entity payment. The amounts separated from one another. The 4C deposit remained. Eastline remained. Some household flows disappeared from dispute. Maya could finally see the problem's edges.
The power went out for several minutes. By phone light, Maya remembered another night near the settlement when she and Omar had been so exhausted that they signed a schedule without walking through every old statement.
“I just wanted it finished,” she said.
Leila's voice softened. “Wanting it finished isn't permission to keep information from you.”
“And it also doesn't prove everything was hidden.”
For once Leila did not argue.
When the power returned, Maya saved version 1.0 of the memo and put the parking-bay line under `next checks`, not `findings`. She added the column Kendi had taught her: `What would change my mind?` For Eastline, proof of an agreed reimbursement. For the school refund, a trace back to family funds. For 4C, a record showing Maya knowingly approved the real purpose.
“That is like writing instructions for Omar to win,” Leila said.
“If nothing can change my mind, this isn't an investigation.”
At one in the morning Maya closed the folder even though curiosity still burned. She emailed the client she had delayed and confirmed a morning meeting. The file had a time and a place. Her current life did not have to wait until Omar answered every question.
Before Leila went to bed, she asked, “Do you still want to know exactly when he and Salma started?”
“Yes,” Maya admitted after a pause. “But I no longer need that answer to do the next piece of work.”
It was a new kind of control: curiosity could remain without receiving authority over the file.
Maya put a sticky note on the unresolved transaction. Two words seemed to open another door.
Refund—parking bay.
