On Wednesday Leila's school held sports day. Amina sat among the parents, far enough away not to make Leila feel watched. Musa arrived after the races and waited for Leila to see him.
A teacher asked who would collect her. Amina did not answer. Musa did not step forward. Amina gave Leila a small nod—not an instruction, but her choice returned.
Leila walked to Musa. The teacher asked whose name should go on the collection form.
“Write Amina as my emergency contact,” Leila said, “and Musa Kato as my father.”
The teacher checked that she meant it.
“I do. I will not call him Uncle because an adult was afraid.”
Musa did not correct her. He did not use a joke to cover the truth. When a classmate asked whether they were going home together, Leila answered, “Amina is my auntie. Musa is my father.”
No one laughed. The fear inside Leila did not become the disaster she had imagined.
Musa admitted he could have said they would explain later.
“But you did not,” Leila said.
Amina asked whether she had chosen the words herself. Leila said she did not want anyone else to tell her who she was. Musa asked where she wanted to go instead of deciding for her.
At the school gate Leila pointed to him for the sports teacher and spoke in an ordinary voice: “This is my father.”
Leila did not run after saying it. She listened while the sports teacher explained the next practice. Musa wrote the date into his phone without calling it an uncle's duty. Amina stood one step behind, feeling the wish to put an arm around Leila but waiting for the girl to turn toward her.
After the event Leila chose to go with Amina first. Musa carried the food he had brought but did not use it to purchase forgiveness. The three of them left through the school gate at different distances, learning how to remain connected without forcing the old performance.
For the first time, Musa did not correct the sentence.
