The trail led to a small printing shop where several Mwangaza flyers had been produced. The owner remembered the job because the files had been revised repeatedly and sent through different phone numbers.
Inspector Kilonzo asked for the original files and the order history. Mariam stood back while the owner searched an old computer and a messaging archive.
“There,” he said. “This was the first version I received.”
The file contained the familiar promotional paragraph. Some sentences matched the message Rose had received from the other sender. Mariam recognized Musa’s language about stability, timing, and a closing opportunity.
“So I didn’t invent all of it,” Mariam said.
“No one said you did,” Achieng replied.
The printer opened a later file. This one carried Mariam’s local phone number and a few wording changes. The text was not identical.
Mariam looked closer.
“Can you show who sent this revision?”
The order history showed her number.
Memory returned with embarrassing clarity. Musa had sent a draft and asked Mariam to “make it sound local.” She had shortened a paragraph and changed the contact details. She had also replaced a cautious sentence with a stronger one because, at the time, she thought confidence would prevent unnecessary panic.
The printer produced another file from the same day. The system showed a revised version under Mariam’s name.
Kilonzo asked, “Did anyone force you to make these edits?”
“No.”
“Did the original wording come partly from Musa?”
“Yes.”
“Both facts stay.”
That sentence had become almost a discipline. Mariam no longer needed one fact to destroy another.
They compared the files line by line. The base message came from higher in the network. The local contact and several phrases were added later. One of those phrases was hers. She had not designed the investment scheme, but she had helped shape the language through which people around her encountered it.
The printer remembered Mariam asking for extra copies before the final small meeting. “You said people were asking too many questions online and it was better to explain face to face.”
Mariam rubbed her forehead. “I probably said that.”
“You did,” he said, then corrected himself. “At least, that is how I remember it.”
Kilonzo recorded it as recollection, not a quotation.
They also found a version that never reached print. It was more cautious and said potential participants should wait for withdrawals to normalize. Mariam stared at it. She could not remember why that version had been abandoned.
Achieng asked her not to fill the gap. “If you don’t remember, say you don’t remember.”
“I don’t remember.”
The sentence felt humiliating and strangely clean.
The files were preserved with their dates. Their history showed something more complicated than either defense or accusation: a common promotional source, local modifications, and Mariam’s own choices inside the chain.
As they prepared to leave, the printer opened the file properties one last time.
The printer showed how the files had moved through several hands. A base flyer came from Musa’s number. Mariam’s revision returned with a local phone number and stronger wording. A later copy went out from another contact. That path mattered because it prevented a convenient simplification in either direction. Mariam could not claim the entire message was hers, and she could not claim her part was invisible. When Kilonzo asked whether she remembered approving the final print run, Mariam found a short reply in her chat: *Print fifty.* She read it twice and handed the phone over without trying to explain the command away.
Before the files were copied, Mariam checked the dates against her phone. One revision had been sent shortly after a conversation in which people were already asking about slow withdrawals. She could not remember whether she had connected those concerns to the printing job at the time. Rather than invent a motive, she said so. Kilonzo recorded the uncertainty and preserved the timestamp. The printer also confirmed that Mariam had collected the finished copies herself, which fixed her involvement in distribution even though it said nothing by itself about what she knew about the scheme’s finances.
The file information showed a version edited by Mariam.
