By Thursday evening, emergency asset-preservation orders had been issued against Vance Global and Sterling BioTech, and DCI investigators had opened formal criminal cases. Prosecutors were preparing arrest warrants for fraud and unauthorised human experimentation. Elena remained under a travel restriction, but Hawthorne had disappeared from Nairobi.
Desperate and facing total financial ruin, Hawthorne fled Nairobi under cover of dusk, driving frantically back towards the Ol Njorowa exploration site.
He knew that deep within Sector Four stood Vance Global’s main control station, where a production manifold regulated steam flow from several wells across Sector Four. If he disabled the automatic safety system and opened the emergency bypass, uncontrolled steam would surge through the network and rupture the wellheads, destroying the Sun-Gazer Trust’s geothermal infrastructure and causing massive environmental damage before he fled the country.
The Trust’s security system detected Hawthorne’s vehicle as it entered Sector Four. Amani and Kaelen took the eastern maintenance tunnel to reach the controls while Kaelen alerted the DCI. The nearest unit was still several minutes away.
Hawthorne forced open the western service door with an iron crowbar and rushed towards the manual override wheel of Wellhead Seven.
"I wouldn’t turn that valve if I were you, Hawthorne," a steady voice sounded from the shadows.
Hawthorne whirled around. Standing near the main pressure gauge was Kaelen Thorne, holding an industrial flashlight. Beside him stood Amani.
"Get out of my way!" Hawthorne screamed, pulling a tactical pistol from his coat. He aimed directly at Amani and pulled the trigger.
The shot cracked through the bunker. Amani reacted with instinctive speed, diving behind a concrete pillar as the round struck a pressure-control line above the manifold.
Superheated steam burst from the rupture, swallowing the room in white vapour. A warning flashed across the control panel: **BLOWOUT RISK—02:57.**
"Hawthorne, you fool! You’ve ruptured the primary loop!" Kaelen shouted, taking cover behind the steel control desk.
Scalding steam seared Hawthorne’s arms. Blinded by steam, Hawthorne reached for the emergency bypass once more, but the intense heat drove him back. Dropping his weapon, he stumbled blindly out of the bunker into the rainy night, fleeing in terror.
"The manual shut-off valve is inside the high-heat zone behind the pipe!" Kaelen called out. "The mechanical bypass is jammed!"
Amani closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She reached out with her mind, connecting to the deep thermal pulse flowing beneath the basalt floor. Her ancestral bond allowed her to feel pressurised geothermal fluids moving through fractures beneath the basalt.
She focused her energy, using her body as a living conduit to guide and slow the underground thermal surge, drawing the pressure away from Wellhead Seven into secondary safety vents. A cold sweat broke across her forehead. Her muscles trembled under the heat.
"I can hold the pressure stable for two or three minutes—no longer!" Amani called, her voice strained with the effort. "Go! Close the manual shut-off!"
Kaelen didn’t hesitate. Trusting her completely, he dragged an emergency steam-entry suit from the wall cabinet, pulled the hood and gloves into place, and entered the whiteout.
The wheel resisted the first turn. Kaelen braced one boot against the console and forced it round again. On the third turn, the valve locked into place with a metallic clunk.
The screaming steam vent subsided. The red pressure gauges began a steady, safe descent back into the green zone.
Kaelen stumbled out of the high-heat zone, coughing, steam rolling from his suit. Amani collapsed to her knees, exhausted, her skin pale from intense thermal strain.
Kaelen immediately dropped beside her, wrapping his arms around her shoulders to support her. "Amani! Are you alright?"
Amani leaned against his chest, her breathing coming in ragged gasps, but a soft, relieved smile touched her lips. She met Kaelen’s worried gaze.
"Three years ago, Kaelen," she whispered, "I thought I had to choose between my heart and my purpose. I was wrong."
Kaelen held her tighter, his thumb gently wiping a streak of grime from her cheek. "You never have to choose again, Amani. We stand together."
Outside, blue police lights cut through the rainy night. Hawthorne reached the perimeter gate just as officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations closed in from both sides. He tried to run, slipped in the deep mud, and was taken into custody beneath the same ridge where he had left Amani to fall.
Later that night, the elders of the Sun-Gazer Trust publicly recognised Amani as the restored bearer of the Covenant—the title traditionally known as the Sun Queen.
