Chapter 4: The Covenant Beneath the Rift

Amani expected the fall to end against solid rock. It did not.

As Amani fell through the sulphur-laced steam, something deep inside her blood answered the rising thermal current. As she passed through the dense heat layer, the pressure of the warm air tightened around her body, slowing her fall until she struck a wide basalt shelf with little more force than a hard landing.

*“Rise, daughter of Wanjiru,”* a deep, resonant murmur vibrated through the stone walls, sounding like the low hum of the earth itself. *“The covenant made beneath Kirinyaga is not broken by malice.”*

Amani stood up slowly. Her body was unbroken. The needle marks on her arms had faded, replaced by a clear, healthy warmth that flowed through her veins.

Below the shelf lay a vast subterranean gallery isolated from the upper canyon. Mineral-rich thermal pools glowed with a deep sapphire light, illuminated by colonies of heat-loving microorganisms living in the warm water.

The power inside her was not a destructive spell, nor was it a divine gift to fight a mortal war. It was the inheritance of the **Sun-Gazer Covenant**—an ancestral bond between her bloodline and the geothermal currents of the Rift. It allowed its bearer to sense subsurface heat and pressure and, at great physical cost, influence the movement of thermal energy. The covenant had first been sworn beneath Kirinyaga, but its guardians watched over the geothermal corridors of the Rift. Among the old guardians, the primary bearer of this thermal covenant had always been known as the Sun Queen—not a monarch, but the keeper entrusted with maintaining the balance between the land above and the fire below. Centuries later, their descendants established the **Sun-Gazer Trust** to give that ancient duty a modern legal and financial structure.

Standing near a carved stone pillar beside the thermal pool was a man dressed in dark leather rain gear, operating a portable inertial mapping unit.

Kaelen Thorne.

He was in his late thirties, his face lean and weathered by years in the field. Born to a Kenyan mother and a British survey engineer, he carried a surveyor’s iron transit over his shoulder, his attention fixed on Amani with profound relief.

"You took your time coming back, Amani," Kaelen said.

Amani looked at him. Ten years ago, they had begun surveying the Rift together. Three years ago, before she married Hawthorne, Kaelen had stepped down as chief surveyor but remained an independent field guardian under the Covenant, monitoring the Trust’s subterranean boundary markers away from Nairobi. He had warned her against marrying an ambitious foreign energy executive. When she refused his advice, Kaelen had continued his field monitoring in silence.

"You knew Hawthorne had breached the ridge tonight," Amani said.

"The boundary sensors alerted me an hour ago," Kaelen explained, handing her a dry woolen cloak. "I had been climbing towards the surface when a damaged access tunnel collapsed, forcing me back into the lower gallery. By the time I reached the shelf, you were already falling. He didn’t just want your plasma, Amani. He wanted to force your biometrics to release the subterranean geological keys."

Kaelen paused, looking into her eyes with a stern, searching gaze. "Tell me one thing, Amani. Are you returning now to protect this land and its people, or are you returning simply to burn Hawthorne to the ground?"

Amani met his gaze without flinching. "I am returning to do both. But the land comes first, Kaelen. As it always should have."

Kaelen looked at her for a long moment, then slowly nodded. "Then let us begin."
